So you have been hurt, and cannot forgive - it has happened to us all. You're unhappy and the person who has hurt you is ok. Do you realise that when you forgive, you help yourself! How can that be? Well, you know those feelings of hate, bitterness, and resentment? When you forgive they will go, and you can experience the peace of God.
Jesus showed us that He forgave us loads more than we ever have to forgive anyone else. So because of that, we must forgive and if we do not, we will be tortured inside by all those bad thoughts and feelings, read Matthew 18:23-35.
On the cross Jesus forgave everyone, even those people who crucified Him. They were not sorry and did not repent (repenting- seeing the wrong and changing to do good).
The Apostle Paul said that we are to forgive in order to keep Satan from getting an advantage over us, 2 Corinthians 2: 10-11. If you try to get revenge, you stopping God from helping and healing you and Satan enjoys seeing you in pain.
How to Forgive
1. Make a choice! "I don't feel like forgiving, but I will, because I know it is obeying God and it will help me. I want to be free from this poison of anger and hate inside".
2. Resist Satan who wants you to hate and not forgive. He knows that if you do not forgive you will be away from God and your prayers will not be answered.
3. Ask for God's help. Yes, you're angry and it is probably for a good reason. In John 20:22-23, Jesus breathed on the disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.” His next instruction was about forgiving people. Ask God to help you, and fill you with His Spirit so you can do this.
4. Obey God.
Pray for your enemies - it will help you turn your anger into love, Luke 6:27-28.Bless and do not curse them (Romans 12:14). You only want revenge because they hurt you, if you truly forgive, you'll realise that you do not want anyone else to feel like you do now.Unforgiveness is spiritual filthiness; don't let Satan keep you there as Matthew 10:8 says, "Freely you have received, freely give".
